THE BLACKOUT ORDER / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Other Elena

The ballot carried Elena’s biometric signature.

It had been submitted ten minutes before Robert entered the mansion.

At that time, Elena was in the foyer refusing Victor’s transfer.

The trust system accepted the vote because it came from her private tablet.

Victor looked at her.

“You planned all of this.”

“No.”

“You staged the confrontation to remove me.”

Robert stepped between them.

“Elena did not stage her injuries.”

Victor pointed toward the screen.

“Then explain her vote.”

Hannah traced the device.

Elena’s tablet had connected from the west wing.

That wing had been closed for renovations for six months.

Only Victor, Margaret and Robert’s security company possessed access.

Robert checked the gate records.

His master credential had opened the west corridor earlier that evening.

He had been driving from Connecticut.

Someone cloned his authority.

The mansion’s security system used voice verification for restricted rooms.

A stored recording of Robert saying “Access approved” had been copied from a training session.

Victor had used the same technique with Elena’s biometric token.

The estate’s wealth had created private shortcuts unavailable to ordinary homeowners.

Those shortcuts became doors for fraud.

Mrs. Lewis looked at Robert.

“Your system let family voices replace living people.”

He nodded.

“Yes.”

Gray Protective Services would fund a complete independent rebuild.

No facial, voice or biometric override would remain under sole family control.

Employee representatives would hold equal security authority.

Then the west-wing camera came online.

A figure in a black household uniform stood inside the archive.

The face remained outside the frame.

The figure held the original employee-share register.

Mrs. Lewis recognized the uniform.

It belonged to Mara Bennett, Ashbourne’s former bookkeeper.

Victor dismissed her two years earlier after she questioned retirement transfers.

He told everyone she had stolen from the family.

No evidence was ever shown.

Mara had entered the mansion using an active co-trustee credential.

Someone had concealed her authority all along.
