Chapter 9 - The Bookkeeper
Mara spoke through the archive intercom.
“I cast the emergency vote.”
Her credential came from the original preservation trust.
The cooperative founders had appointed two permanent record keepers:
One selected by the family.
One selected by the workers.
Victor’s office removed the worker trustee from every modern copy.
Mara inherited that role from her mother.
When she discovered the missing funds, Victor dismissed her and threatened to accuse her of financial theft.
Mara disappeared from public view because his attorneys froze her accounts and warned every estate employer in the Northeast not to hire her.
Elena looked at Victor.
“You blacklisted another woman and called her disappearance proof of guilt.”
He stared toward the west wing.
“She took confidential files.”
“They were cooperative records,” Mara answered.
“They belonged to the workers.”
She had spent two years reconstructing ownership and payment histories.
The emergency vote removed Victor only temporarily.
The legitimate employee board had now confirmed it.
Mara transmitted the original register.
The cooperative did not own only Ashbourne House.
Worker contributions had also rescued Carrington Hotels during a financial crisis.
Their thirty-one-percent company interest had been hidden for decades.
Unpaid dividends were worth billions.
Victor looked horrified.
“The company cannot recognize that claim.”
Mrs. Lewis answered:
“The company recognized our deductions.”
The new board froze executive bonuses.
Hotel workers would continue receiving wages.
Guest operations would remain open.
Employee housing, healthcare and pensions received priority.
Victor’s family distributions stopped.
Elena transferred her own voting rights into temporary independent oversight until the damage was fully measured.
She did not replace Victor as a new unquestioned ruler.
The workers received permanent seats.
Robert’s company entered external audit.
The mansion lights remained dark.
For the first time, darkness protected the truth instead of hiding it.
Then Mara opened one final ledger.
The employee shares had already been sold six months earlier.
