Chapter 1 - The Bow

“You’ve embarrassed us enough.”
Victoria Harrington snapped Elena’s violin bow between her jeweled hands.
The thin wooden shaft broke cleanly. Both pieces landed on the marble beside the open violin case.
A restrained gasp moved through the ballroom.
Elena remained standing beneath the chandeliers, her eyes burning but her shoulders straight.
She had been hired to perform during the charity auction—not invited to attend it. Her black concert dress had been purchased secondhand. Her shoes had been repaired twice. The bow Victoria destroyed had belonged to Elena’s mother.
Victoria looked toward the guests holding numbered paddles.
“This woman interrupted a private donor conversation and accused my foundation of fraud.”
Elena’s humiliation deepened.
No one asked what she had heard.
They saw an old-money socialite covered in diamonds and a struggling violinist standing beside an open case.
The room had already decided whose voice carried more value.
Elena lowered herself beside the case.
She did not touch the broken bow.
Instead, she lifted the faded velvet lining her mother had sewn years earlier.
A concealed compartment opened beneath it.
Inside rested an old cassette tape.
Elena held it carefully.
“My mother said this belonged here.”
Victoria’s smug smile vanished.
The auctioneer, Julian Mercer, stepped down from the platform. He studied the tape’s aged casing without touching it.
“That recording disappeared twelve years ago.”
Elena slowly rose and placed the cassette on the auction table.
Julian looked from the tape to Victoria.
“It names whoever stole the charity fund.”
Victoria’s jeweled hand began to tremble.
Then Elena noticed something written faintly along the cassette’s edge.
Not a name.
