Chapter 10 - Side B

Julian turned the cassette over.
Side B had never been played.
Victoria stepped backward.
“Elena, you have already restored your mother’s name.”
Her voice sounded almost desperate.
“Do not play that.”
Elena looked at her.
“You broke the last thing my mother left me because you believed humiliation would keep me quiet.”
She placed the cassette back into the player.
Side B began with silence.
Then Sofia’s voice emerged.
“Victoria moved the money, but the original order did not come from her.”
Victoria closed her eyes.
“The Harrington family believed scholarship funds belonged to them because wealthy donors had raised them.”
Another man’s voice answered.
“The donors did not raise the money. The children’s stories did.”
Julian recognized the speaker.
Elena did too.
Her father, Michael Reed.
Elena had been told he abandoned the family when she was eight.
On the tape, Michael said he had traced ninety million dollars through hidden foundation accounts.
He planned to return it to the scholarship beneficiaries.
Sofia asked:
“Where will you keep it until the investigation begins?”
Michael answered:
“In Elena’s name.”
The ballroom went silent.
Elena stared at the cassette player.
She had spent years unable to afford new strings while an account carrying her identity held millions.
Victoria spoke quickly.
“Your parents used you to hide stolen funds.”
“No,” Julian said.
“The recording is incomplete.”
He opened the cassette casing.
A miniature bank key was secured inside.
The attached account number matched a dormant trust holding ninety-four million dollars.
The legal owner was Elena Reed.
Victoria smiled for the first time since the bow snapped.
“If she controls stolen charity money, she is not a victim.”
“She is the thief’s beneficiary.”
Guests began looking toward Elena differently.
The same people who had just witnessed her mother’s innocence were already tempted by a new accusation.
Old habits returned quickly when the woman under suspicion wore a modest black dress.
Elena kept her dignity.
“Freeze the account.”
Victoria’s smile disappeared.
“Return every verified dollar to the students and workers.”
Julian looked at her with respect.
Then he examined the trust’s opening date.
His face changed.
“What is it?” Elena asked.
“The account was opened three days after your father was declared dead.”
Elena stopped breathing.
A final audio fragment played.
Michael’s voice:
“If Elena finds this tape, tell her I did not abandon her.”
A pause.
“I entered the Harrington family under another name.”
Elena slowly looked across the silent guests.
The cassette continued:
“The man who has been standing beside Victoria at every auction is her husband.”
Victoria’s jeweled hands began shaking.
The ballroom doors opened.
A silver-haired man entered carrying the missing charity ledger.
Victoria whispered:
“Michael?”
Elena stared at the father she had mourned for twenty years.
He placed the ledger beside the broken bow.
Then looked directly at her.
“I came back because Side B does not name the person who stole the fund.”
A pause.
May you like
“It names the person your mother died protecting.”
TO BE CONTINUED.
