Chapter 3 - Her Mother’s Name

The recording continued.
Sofia sounded frightened but controlled.
“You moved scholarship money into the mansion restoration account.”
Victoria replied:
“The mansion hosts the gala. Protecting it protects the charity.”
“You spent student money on chandeliers.”
“Donors expect elegance.”
Elena looked upward.
The crystal chandelier above them had cost more than two hundred full-year music scholarships.
Victoria reached toward the cassette player.
Julian blocked the table without touching her.
“The recording continues.”
Sofia’s voice returned.
“Return the money, or I will bring the ledger to the attorney general.”
Victoria laughed on the tape.
“You clean rehearsal rooms after the musicians leave. No one will believe you understand our accounts.”
The insult cut through the ballroom.
Victoria had not merely denied Sofia’s evidence.
She used her job to make intelligence appear impossible.
Elena watched wealthy guests lower their eyes.
Several had attended the press conference where Victoria announced Sofia’s dismissal.
None had questioned why the accused bookkeeper could not afford legal counsel while the foundation hired one of New York’s most expensive firms.
The recording ended with Victoria saying:
“By morning, the missing funds will carry your signature.”
The tape clicked.
Elena did not cry.
“My mother spent twelve years asking people to listen.”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“A recording can be altered.”
Julian removed the cassette.
“The foundation archive marked this tape as original evidence.”
He turned it over.
A numbered wax seal remained beneath the label.
The seal matched the charity’s internal evidence register.
Sofia had been telling the truth.
Then Julian opened the old auction ledger.

The seventy thousand dollars supposedly stolen by Sofia had never entered her account.
It had paid for Victoria’s diamond necklace.
