Chapter 1 - DAD, MOVE!

Ethan heard crying before he reached the kitchen.

Then Emily screamed.

“Dad, move!”

He dropped sideways.

A sharp impact struck the white stone countertop beside him.

Sparks flashed.

Stone dust jumped.

Margaret screamed and covered her ears.

Ethan hit the floor near the stainless refrigerator.

For one second, no one moved.

Then Vanessa’s voice came from behind the island.

Cold.

Controlled.

“Stay down.”

Ethan stared at the broken mark in the countertop.

Then toward Emily.

His daughter stood near the French doors.

Tears on her face.

A small red mark near her forehead.

His expression changed.

Not fear.

Something worse.

Understanding.

“Emily.”

His voice hardened.

“What happened to your head?”

Vanessa immediately said,

“She fell.”

Emily looked at her.

“No.”

The room changed.

That was the first crack.

Margaret began crying harder.

Vanessa pointed the handgun toward Ethan again.

“Everyone needs to stop talking.”

Ethan stayed low.

He did not move closer.

Did not shout.

Did not provoke her.

He only watched.

Emily’s eyes stayed on him.

“Dad, she’s lying.”

Vanessa turned toward her.

Wrong move.

Ethan saw it.

Emily continued.

“She wasn’t angry when you came in.”

Vanessa froze.

“She was waiting.”

Silence.

Ethan looked at the raised wooden spoon on the floor.

Then at Margaret crouched behind the island.

Then at Emily’s forehead.

Waiting for what?

Vanessa said,

“Emily is confused.”

There it was.

The favorite word people use when the truth becomes inconvenient.

Emily shook her head.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“I remember everything.”

Margaret whispered,

“Don’t.”

Too late.

That was the second crack.

Ethan looked at his mother.

“Don’t what?”

Margaret said nothing.

Vanessa stepped backward.

The satin robe shifted.

And something fell from the pocket.

Not ammunition.

Not a phone.

A small silver key.

Emily stared at it.

Margaret went pale.

Ethan saw both reactions.

“What does that open?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Emily whispered,

“The drawer she told me never to touch.”

The room froze.

Ethan looked toward the kitchen island.

One narrow locked drawer sat beneath the counter.

Vanessa raised the handgun.

“Don’t.”

Too fast.

Too afraid.

That was enough.

Because Ethan suddenly understood.

The weapon was terrifying.

May you like

But it was not the secret Vanessa was most afraid of.

The secret was inside the drawer.
