Chapter 7 - THE NAME EMILY WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO HEAR

Emily’s father was named Adrian Wells.
The room went silent.
Ethan looked at her.
Then at the black folder.
Then at Vanessa.
“No.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“My father left when I was nine.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
That was the first crack.
Emily saw it.
“You know him.”
Margaret said nothing.
Too late.
Ethan turned toward his mother.
“You know Emily’s father.”
Margaret answered carefully.
“I knew Adrian.”
Emily stopped breathing.
Not knew of him.
Knew him.
That difference hurt.
Vanessa looked toward the door.
Wrong move.
Ethan saw it.
“You knew too.”
No answer.
Emily’s voice became small.
“Was my father here?”
Margaret said nothing.
Ethan opened the black folder again.
The photograph.
Charles.
Margaret.
Vanessa.
Adrian Wells.
Emily looked at the man for the first time in eighteen years.
Older.
Same eyes.
Her father.
Standing beside the people now surrounding her.
That was the second crack.
She took the photo.
Her hands shook.
“He didn’t leave.”
Margaret looked away.
Emily stared at her.
“You told people he abandoned me.”
No answer.
“Did he?”
Margaret said nothing.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“Answer her.”
Margaret finally spoke.
“He left the country.”
Emily’s eyes filled.
“Why?”
Silence.
Vanessa answered.
“Because Charles found out what he had done.”
Everyone turned.
That was the third crack.
Emily looked at her.
“What did he do?”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“You think your father was the victim?”
Emily said nothing.
Vanessa continued.
“He created the first false proxy.”
Ethan stopped breathing.
The same method.
Years earlier.
Charles’s signature.
Margaret’s approval.
Company control.
Adrian had built the system they were still using.
Emily looked at the photograph.
Her father had not been an outsider.
He had designed the trap.
Then Ethan remembered Charles’s warning:
Do not trust the first person who says they are afraid of him.
Margaret had claimed fear.
Vanessa too.
Maybe both had also been accomplices.
Emily looked at the white fireplace.
The envelope.
Eighteen years.
Waiting.
Ethan stayed low.
“Emily.”
She looked at him.
“The envelope.”
She understood.
The brass clock above the fireplace.
Charles had told her where to hide it.
She had forgotten.
Until now.
Margaret whispered,
“Don’t open it.”
Too fast.
Too afraid.
That was enough.
Emily moved only after Vanessa lowered the weapon slightly.
Slow.
Careful.
No sudden step.
She reached the clock.
Opened the back panel.
One yellowed envelope remained inside.
Addressed in Charles Hale’s handwriting.
For Emily Wells, when she learns what her father did.
Emily stopped breathing.
She opened it.
Inside was one letter.
One photograph.
And one old train ticket.
The letter began:
Emily, your father did not leave because he stopped loving you.
Her eyes filled.
Then came the next line.
He left because Margaret gave him a choice.
The room froze.
Disappear, or let his daughter become the evidence against him.
Emily looked at Margaret.
No tears now.
Only truth.
Then she turned the page.
And saw a copy of her own childhood medical file.
Already prepared.
Already labeled:
Emotional instability.
May you like
Dated when she was nine.
The same year her father disappeared.
