Chapter 4 - THE DEAD MAN’S SIGNATURE

Ethan stared at his father’s name.
Charles Hale.
Dead six years.
Still signing documents.
Vanessa said,
“You don’t understand what you’re looking at.”
Ethan almost laughed.
Not with humor.
“Then explain how a dead man approved tomorrow’s vote.”
Silence.
That was the first crack.
Margaret wiped her face.
“I didn’t know about Charles.”
Vanessa looked at her.
Wrong move.
Ethan saw it.
“So you knew about something else.”
Margaret closed her eyes.
Too late.
Emily looked at the screen.
The documents had dates.
Some recent.
Some five years old.
Some from before Charles died.
Ethan’s face hardened.
“How long has this been happening?”
No one answered.
The wall tablet showed the security archive.
Emily looked toward it.
“Dad.”
He followed her eyes.
A hidden folder.
FOUNDATION NIGHT.
Timestamped six years earlier.
The night Charles Hale died.
Vanessa went white.
That was the second crack.
Ethan stared at her.
“You were here.”
She said nothing.
He opened the file remotely through voice command.
The foyer appeared on-screen.
Charles Hale entered.
Alive.
Angry.
Holding a black leather folder.
Margaret followed him.
Then a younger Vanessa appeared.
Ethan froze.
“You knew her before me.”
Margaret said nothing.
The recording had no audio.
But the blocking was clear.
Charles slammed the folder onto a table.
Pointed toward Margaret.
Then Vanessa.
Then toward the front door.
Leave.
But neither woman moved.
Ethan’s breathing changed.
Vanessa said,
“That proves nothing.”
Emily looked at her.
“You really like that sentence.”
Silence.
That was the third crack.
The footage continued.
Charles opened the black folder.
Showed one page.
Margaret stepped back.
Vanessa looked terrified.
Then the video ended.
Ethan stared at the timestamp.
Six hours later, his father was found unresponsive in his study.
The official record called it a natural cardiac event.
Emily looked at Vanessa.
“Was that folder ever found?”
Margaret whispered,
“No.”
Too fast.
Ethan turned toward her.
“You searched for it.”
Silence.
Emily saw the locked drawer.
The same drawer.
The same kitchen.
The same signature stamp.
The same pattern.
She looked at her father.
“What if the folder is still here?”
Vanessa raised the weapon slightly.
“Stop talking.”
Wrong move.
Everyone saw it.
That was the fourth crack.
Ethan looked at the drawer.
Then at Vanessa.
“You’re not afraid of the proxy papers.”
No answer.
“You’re afraid of what else is inside.”
Vanessa said nothing.
Margaret started shaking.
Then Emily noticed something under the island.
A loose white stone panel.
One edge slightly darker.
She had seen it when she fell.
Ethan followed her eyes.
Vanessa saw them looking.
Her face changed.
Too late.
May you like
Because beneath that loose stone panel was a black leather folder.
The same one Charles had carried six years earlier.
