Chapter 1 - The Key Hidden in Her Sleeve

Ethan pushed open the bathroom door and froze.
A seven-year-old girl—Lily—was curled on top of a closed toilet seat, trembling violently. Her mint-green hoodie was soaked with a dark, spreading stain across her back.
“Sweetheart… who did this to you?”
Lily didn’t answer.
She only reached for him.
Ethan lifted her into his arms and carried her out into the birthday party.
The moment he stepped into the room, the celebration died.
Glass stopped clinking. Conversations collapsed into silence.
Claire set her wine down with surgical calm.
“Put her down. Now.”
Ethan turned his body, shielding the child.
“Don’t touch her. You locked her in there.”
Robert hurled an empty glass. It shattered against the doorframe, sending guests stumbling back.
Daniel kept filming.
Ethan didn’t flinch.
“Good,” he said quietly. “The police will want this.”
Outside, away from the crowd, Lily finally whispered:
“Aunt Claire said poor kids should be grateful for any room they’re given.”
Then she pulled something from her sleeve.

“But this… opens the cabinet where they hid Mom’s papers.”
