Ethan stared at the document.
“I never signed this.”
Months earlier, Claire had asked him to sign “school insurance forms” after Rachel’s death.
That signature had been lifted.
Reused.
Weaponized.
Claire spoke calmly to police:
“Rachel was emotional. Women from unstable backgrounds often misinterpret financial responsibility.”
Lily clung to Ethan’s jacket.
“My mom wasn’t crazy,” she said. “She said Aunt Claire steals from tenants.”
Rachel had been the company’s financial manager.
She discovered:
Maintenance fees from low-income tenants were diverted into luxury expenses
Rent money funded Robert’s retirement portfolio
Repairs were systematically ignored
Ethan submitted inspection reports:
Mold-infested walls
Broken heating systems in winter
Gas leaks left unresolved
Robert shrugged.
“They pay below market rent. They should be grateful.”
Ethan’s reply was quiet but sharp:
“They paid for repairs you never made.”
