Chapter 4 - The Women Who Never Abandoned Their Babies
Rachel Caldwell told Claire she had not abandoned anyone.
After giving birth, Dr. Vale declared her unstable, placed her under sedation and transferred custody to the Caldwell family.
The newspapers described her as a poor, ungrateful woman who married for money and ran when motherhood became difficult.
In reality, she spent eleven months inside a private psychiatric facility owned by Harrison Caldwell’s foundation.
When she was released, every attorney she contacted warned that challenging one of Colorado’s most powerful judicial families would destroy her.
Marcus looked at her with contempt.
“You signed the custody surrender.”
Rachel held up her scarred wrist.
“I signed blank hospital forms while drugged, and your family filled in the words later.”
Eleanor opened the Maternal Transfer files.
They documented twelve women from working-class families who married wealthy men, became pregnant and were later declared mentally unfit.
Their children’s trusts passed to paternal relatives.
Their stories were nearly identical.
The women were called unstable.
Their husbands were called concerned.
Their poverty became evidence while the family’s money purchased doctors, judges and silence.
Claire faced Marcus.
“You did not lose control today. You followed a script your family has used for years.”
Marcus’s voice turned vicious.
“Without the Caldwells, you would still be answering phones at a legal-aid office. Do not confuse being chosen with being equal.”
Claire stepped closer despite her tears.
“You chose me because you thought gratitude would make me obedient. That was your mistake.”
Rachel pointed to a handwritten note in the file.
The next transfer was scheduled for that evening.
The patient was Claire.
The facility had already prepared a room.
