Chapter 7 - The Soldier Who Stayed Silent
Every person in the chapel turned toward Ruiz.
Emily had trusted him because he was the only soldier who visited after James died.
Sarah had believed his promises that the military was still investigating.
Now the video placed him beside James only hours before the fatal test.
Ruiz removed his white gloves and admitted that James had asked him to deliver the backpack if anything happened.
He had recovered it from the testing range after the accident and hidden it from General Hayes.
For months, he was too afraid to deliver it.
Hayes threatened to prosecute him for removing evidence and warned that Ruiz’s teenage son could lose access to a military medical program.
Ruiz finally left the backpack outside Sarah’s apartment when he learned the Mercer family planned to exclude Emily from the memorial.
Sarah asked why he had not told her sooner.
Ruiz answered that fear had made him protect his own family at the expense of hers.
He did not request forgiveness.
The confession separated him from the wealthy men in the room.
They described every betrayal as strategy.
Ruiz called his silence what it was.
Cowardice.
The video continued.
James told Ruiz that defective equipment was only part of the scandal.
Mercer Tactical had billed the government for thousands of protective plates that had never been manufactured.
General Hayes certified delivery.
Thomas used his foundation to move the money.
Grant intended to blame James for leaking documents after the contract was paid.
Ruiz begged James to remain silent until Emily could be moved somewhere safe.
James refused.
He said every soldier wearing the equipment was someone’s parent, child or spouse.
Thomas accused Ruiz of manipulating a dead man’s words to save himself.
Then Major Brooks displayed bank records showing that Ruiz had rejected a two-million-dollar payment offered through a Mercer charity.
The payment had instead been deposited into another account.
That account belonged to Vivian Mercer.
Vivian’s grief vanished beneath sudden fear.
She admitted transferring the money but claimed it had been used to protect Emily.
Major Brooks opened the attached instructions.
They ordered a private investigator to photograph Sarah, search her financial history and create evidence that she was an unfit guardian.
The final instruction read: IF SARAH RESISTS, PLACE THE CHILD WITH THE MERCER FAMILY.

Vivian looked at her granddaughter and said, “I was trying to save you from becoming poor like them.”
