Chapter 4 - The Signature
Victoria admitted preparing the documents.
She denied forging them.
“You approved electronic household signatures before the wedding.”
“For florist invoices.”
“And educational decisions.”
“No.”
Ethan showed her the guardianship surrender.
“This removes me as Lily’s legal guardian.”
“Temporarily.”
Lily flinched at the word.
Ethan noticed.
Victoria continued:
“Hawthorne is one of the best schools in the country.”
“It is eight hundred miles away.”
“She would receive structure.”
“She has a home.”
Victoria looked toward the elegant guests.
“She has a room in your house.”
The insult was quieter this time.
More polished.
More dangerous.
To Victoria, belonging required blood, money and presentation. Lily had blood, but she arrived with grief, public-school manners and a suitcase from a modest apartment.
That made her temporary.
Ethan looked at the transfer form.
The receiving guardian was the Whitmore Educational Foundation.
Victoria’s father chaired its board.
“This sends Lily into your family’s control.”
“It gives her opportunities.”
“She already has an inheritance.”
Victoria’s eyes shifted.
Ethan saw it.
“What does the school have to do with Sarah’s trust?”
No answer.
Rosa removed a second folder from Lily’s flower basket.
Sarah had given it to her before she died, with instructions to open it only if someone tried to send Lily away.
Inside was the Mercer Community Housing Trust.
Lily owned thirty-eight percent.
