Chapter 6 - Sarah’s Rule
Sarah had anticipated an attempt to control Lily.
Buried inside the housing trust was a protection clause.
If anyone used abandonment, institutional placement or emotional coercion to obtain Lily’s shares, the thirty-eight-percent interest would temporarily convert into fifty-one-percent voting control.
The acting protector would not be Ethan.
Sarah believed family pressure could compromise him.
The protector named in the trust was Rosa Alvarez.
Victoria stared at the housekeeper.
“You?”
Rosa looked equally shaken.
Sarah had never told her.
The trust attorney confirmed the appointment by video.
Rosa could freeze property sales.
Suspend development negotiations.
Cancel unauthorized guardianship transfers.
And protect the residents until Lily became old enough to vote her own shares.
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You would give a housekeeper control of a billion-dollar property trust?”
Rosa looked at her.
“No.”
“Sarah did.”
A pause.
“She trusted the person who knew those residents by name.”
Rosa’s late husband had maintained the first housing community.
Her daughter taught at its public school.
Her sister lived there after a medical bankruptcy.
To Victoria, the properties were underperforming land.
To Rosa, they were homes.
Rosa activated the protection clause.
The Whitmore development offer froze.
Lily’s transfer to Hawthorne was canceled.
Victoria’s father lost temporary access to every trust record.
Then the attorney revealed that the forged guardianship surrender had triggered another condition.
