Chapter 8 - No Wedding
Ethan returned to the ballroom carrying Lily.
The guests expected an explanation.
Victoria followed several steps behind, alone in her wedding gown.
Ethan stood beneath the chandelier where he should have exchanged vows.
“There will be no wedding today.”
A murmur moved through the room.
He did not expose every private detail.
He stated only what could be proven.
Lily had been hidden.
Her guardianship surrender had been forged.
Her trust had been targeted.
Housing funds had been used for wedding expenses.
Then he looked toward the servers, florists and maintenance workers.
“No employee will lose pay because this event ended early.”
The statement surprised them.
Wealthy families often called their canceled celebrations tragedies while making hourly workers absorb the cost.
Ethan instructed the venue to pay every contracted worker in full.
From his personal account.
Not Lily’s trust.
Not the housing reserve.
Victoria stared at him.
“You are humiliating my family.”
He answered:
“You humiliated a child because you thought no one important would hear her cry.”
Rosa announced that the two million dollars would be returned to the housing repair fund.
Executive distributions from the Whitmore development company were frozen until repayment.
The server whose mother lived in one of the communities began to cry.
Not from revenge.
From relief.
Her building’s roof would finally be repaired.
Then Lily reached into her flower basket.
“Uncle Ethan, I found this in the dark room.”
