Chapter 2 - The Waitress

Adrian looked at the enormous spreadsheet filling the screen.

“This is stolen information.”

Diane wiped the blood from her chin with a white napkin.

“No.”

“I created it.”

Several older guests turned toward her.

Adrian laughed nervously.

“You were a banquet waitress.”

The insult landed exactly as he intended.

Not former financial director.

Not company co-founder.

Waitress.

A title Adrian believed erased everything Diane had built after carrying trays.

Diane looked toward the servers standing along the walls.

“Yes.”

“I served dinners in this room before your family owned it.”

Adrian’s face tightened.

Thirty-two years earlier, Diane worked nights at the Crosswell Hotel while studying accounting at a community college.

She discovered that the struggling hotel was losing millions through fraudulent vendor contracts.

She reorganized the books without being asked.

Adrian’s grandfather used her work to save the company.

He later gave Diane a small office beside the kitchen.

No title.

No executive salary.

No invitation to the boardroom.

Yet every profitable expansion carried numbers she had prepared.

“You were an employee,” Adrian said.

Diane looked at him.

“So were the people whose wages built your inheritance.”

The payroll ledger showed thousands of deductions marked as contributions to an employee ownership fund.

Housekeepers.

Cooks.

Maintenance workers.

Banquet servers.

Drivers.

Money was removed from every paycheck.

No employee ever received a share.

Adrian lifted his chin.

“The fund was legally restructured.”

Diane selected the next page.

Eighty-six million dollars had left it.

The money purchased the gala hall.

The ballroom in which Adrian stood.
