Chapter 7 - The Witnesses

No guest laughed now.

Adrian looked toward the doors.

“Open them.”

Diane remained still.

“You wanted witnesses when you planned to humiliate me.”

A pause.

“Now you have them.”

He lowered his voice.

“You are destroying my reputation over one sentence.”

“No.”

“Your reputation was built on thousands of sentences said when you believed workers could not answer.”

Diane displayed internal messages from Crosswell executives.

Housekeepers were called replaceable.

Maintenance staff were described as unskilled liabilities.

Banquet employees were told their wages remained low because tips should teach gratitude.

One message came from Adrian himself.

Do not promote too many people from service positions. Guests notice class.

A server near the wall removed his white gloves.

He had worked at Crosswell for seventeen years.

Adrian had passed him hundreds of times without learning his name.

“Mr. Cross,” the man said, “my daughter has a finance degree.”

Adrian looked at him blankly.

“She applied for twelve corporate positions.”

Every application was rejected.

An internal note appeared beside her name:

Family background does not match executive culture.

Diane watched shame spread through the ballroom.

The injustice was no longer hidden in accounting language.

It had entered people’s homes.

Their children’s careers.

Their retirement plans.

Their dignity.

The board members were attending the gala in full voting capacity.

Diane invoked her restored fifty-one-percent authority.

The first motion removed Adrian as foundation chairman.

The vote passed.

The second suspended him as chief executive.

That vote also passed.

Then Diane introduced the third motion.

Adrian read the screen.

His fear became panic.

It proposed transferring permanent board seats to hotel employees.
