Chapter 6 - The Charity

The gala existed to celebrate the Crosswell Opportunity Foundation.
Photographs around the ballroom showed Adrian visiting food banks, scholarship ceremonies and affordable-housing projects.
He had built a public identity around generosity.
The financial records told another story.
Employee pension money funded the foundation’s offices.
Worker deductions purchased Adrian’s private jet, later labeled a charitable travel asset.
Hotel staff volunteered at foundation events because managers told them participation would improve promotion opportunities.
Those promotions rarely came.
Adrian stared at the screen.
“The foundation has helped thousands.”
“With money taken from thousands,” Diane replied.
“Results still matter.”
“So does consent.”
He turned toward the donors.
“Every major charity uses administrative assets.”
Diane displayed his annual compensation.
Seven million dollars from the hotel company.
Four million from the foundation.
A private housing allowance.
Travel expenses.
Performance bonuses.
Meanwhile, Crosswell housekeepers had been denied a one-dollar hourly raise.
One donor placed her champagne glass on a table.
Another removed his foundation pin.
Adrian saw public admiration leaving him piece by piece.
He stepped closer to Diane.
“You waited until tonight to embarrass me.”
“No.”
“I waited until the people who praised you were present to hear who paid for that praise.”
His eyes moved toward the thin blood mark on her face.
“You planned this after I tried to remove you.”
Diane looked at him.
“I planned this after your company removed eight hundred workers from the pension plan.”
She opened a security recording from an hour earlier.
It showed Adrian blocking Diane near the service corridor.
He called her an old waitress.
He ordered staff to escort her through the kitchen.
Then he grabbed for her phone.
The ballroom saw how her lip was injured.
Adrian’s face collapsed.
But the recording contained something worse.

His final sentence to her:
“People like you should be grateful we let you inside.”
