Chapter 8 - The Alternate Receiver

The alternate receiver was Northline Civic Partners.

A company registered in Delaware three days after Eleanor mailed her complaint.

Northline had no employees.

No office.

No public directors.

Yet it possessed temporary rights over six hundred million dollars in housing property because Maya acted before midnight.

Adrian laughed again.

“You triggered the transfer.”

Maya did not react.

She opened the governing agreement.

The trigger activated only if three events occurred:

Claire refused to sign.

Maya arrested Adrian early.

And the federal freeze failed.

Someone had anticipated every act.

Claire looked toward Adrian.

“Did you create Northline?”

“No.”

For the first time, his denial sounded genuine.

He expected the housing sale to enrich his development company.

He did not know a hidden receiver would take control if the plan failed.

Adrian had designed a theft.

Someone else had designed a trap around it.

Northline’s registration documents carried Samuel Price’s electronic seal.

But its bank account had been funded by Cole Grand Hotels.

Maya traced the first deposit.

It came from a settlement owed to hotel employees after a wage-theft case.

The employees never received the money.

The company marked the settlement paid.

Northline received it instead.

The hidden receiver had been built with stolen worker compensation.

Eleanor looked at Adrian.

“Your family stole our wages twice.”

“Once when we earned them.”

“Again when we won them back.”

The employee council petitioned the state court for immediate control of Northline’s disputed assets.

The court granted temporary protection because the company had been funded through employee money.

The six hundred million did not return to Claire.

It did not remain with Adrian.

It entered a safeguarded worker trust pending full review.

Residents kept their homes.

No family member could borrow against them.

The penthouse title moved into the same trust.

Adrian looked around the glass room.

“You can’t give my home to hotel workers.”

Eleanor answered:

“You already charged them for it.”

Then Maya received a message from Price.

Bring Adrian to the service elevator. Come alone.

May you like

A second line followed.

Or Claire’s real signature goes public.
