Chapter 9 - The Real Signature

Claire stared at the message.
“What real signature?”
Price transmitted a document.
It authorized the original creation of Claire Cole Holdings.
The signature was handwritten.
Not digital.
A notary had witnessed it.
Claire recognized the date.
Sixteen months earlier, Adrian took her to a hospital fundraiser.
He asked her to sign a donation pledge at the end of the evening.
The page beneath the pledge had been the company authorization.
Transfer paper copied her signature.
The notary was a Cole family attorney.
Claire had unknowingly created the company later used to frame her.
But one section was completed in her own handwriting.
She had written:
For the protection of employee housing.
Adrian looked confused.
“That was not in my version.”
Claire remembered the donation pledge.
The fundraiser claimed to protect housing for hospital service workers.
She added the sentence before signing because the event’s purpose mattered to her.
Someone preserved those words on the hidden authorization.
Legally, Claire Cole Holdings could use its assets only to protect employee housing.
Adrian’s planned sale violated the company’s founding restriction.
Northline’s receivership violated it too.
The employee council now had grounds to cancel both.
Price’s threat had become evidence.
Maya forwarded the document to the state court and independent federal inspector general.
Then she replied:
We are coming through the main elevator.
Not alone.
Eleanor.
Claire.
The employee trust attorney.
And two independently assigned federal agents arrived upstairs after Price’s suspension was confirmed.
Adrian would be transported professionally.
No service corridor.
No private exchange.
No opportunity to make an employee entrance the place where truth disappeared.
Before leaving, Claire faced Adrian.
“You made me believe my signature gave you ownership.”
“It gave the workers protection.”
The transfer was voided.
Claire Cole Holdings became a permanent legal-defense organization governed by residents and employees.
Adrian’s assets remained frozen.
His arrest continued.

Then Maya checked Price’s personnel file.
His federal career began with a recommendation from Claire’s late father.
