Anna’s mother, Lorraine Reed, had worked as a laundry supervisor at the Whitmore Harbor Hotel until she died in an alleged car accident twelve years earlier.

Anna had identified her through a sealed hospital window because the family was told the injuries were too severe for a normal viewing.

The photograph inside the casket had been taken only three months ago.

Once again, the room treated the Whitmores’ denial as fact and Anna’s grief as manipulation.

Henry’s recording continued.

He confessed that Lorraine had discovered a scheme that diverted hotel workers’ retirement contributions into private investment accounts controlled by Whitmore executives.

When she refused to sign a false confession, someone arranged her disappearance and convinced her children that she was dead.

Anna’s knees nearly failed beneath her.

She had left nursing school to support Marcus after their mother’s funeral.

She had worked double shifts, postponed marriage and carried the guilt of being unable to afford a better lawyer.

All those sacrifices had been built upon a lie designed by people who spent more on floral arrangements than Anna earned in a year.

Henry said Lorraine had survived under federal protection but disappeared again after agreeing to testify.

The photograph contained a clue to her last location.

Julian stepped toward the casket, but Anna took the picture first.

On the back, Henry had written an address in South Boston and one warning.
