Chapter 7 - The Heir Who Lost Twelve Years

Julian admitted that at nineteen he had signed documents authorizing an emergency relocation for a hotel employee and her children.
His father told him the family was protecting a witness from organized crime.
Julian never read the attached pages.
His signature was later used to approve Lorraine’s false death certificate, Marcus’s payments and surveillance of Anna.
Mrs. Whitmore called that excuse pathetic.
She said an heir had no right to claim ignorance after signing documents that destroyed another family.
Anna agreed with her, surprising everyone.
Julian’s youth and privilege did not erase the consequences.
While he attended Harvard, traveled through Europe and inherited board seats, Anna buried an empty casket, abandoned her education and raised Marcus alone.
Julian apologized, but Anna refused to comfort him for finally recognizing pain she had carried for twelve years.
Henry’s voice recorder instructed them to use the chapel organ key to unlock a hidden archive.
Samuel opened a narrow door behind the pipes.
Inside were hundreds of employment files documenting housekeepers, cooks, drivers and attendants falsely accused of theft after reporting abuses within Whitmore properties.
Many had lost homes, custody cases or immigration appeals because the family circulated their names through a private blacklist.
Mrs. Whitmore denied authorizing it.
Then Anna found her signature on every termination order.
Eleanor removed one glove and revealed severe tremors in her hand.
She confessed that Henry had forced her to sign blank pages for years, threatening to expose her father’s financial crimes if she resisted.
Anna felt no triumph.
The powerful widow who had condemned her was also a woman controlled by wealthier men, but Eleanor had preserved her comfort by allowing poorer women to suffer in her place.
Before federal agents could copy the archive, smoke appeared beneath the hidden door.
Someone had activated a fire inside the records room.
Julian rushed for an extinguisher.
Anna grabbed the most recent file.
The cover read HENRY WHITMORE—CURRENT LOCATION.
Inside was a map of the chapel basement and a handwritten message.
