Chapter 6 - The Brother Who Accepted Their Money
Marcus Reed arrived at the chapel wearing a dark suit Anna had never seen and accompanied by one of the Whitmore company’s senior attorneys.
Only a month earlier, he had called Anna from a borrowed phone because he could not afford his electric bill.
Now he wore a watch worth more than their childhood home.
Marcus admitted that the family had rehired him as a private compliance consultant after his dismissal.
He claimed he accepted the position to gather evidence about the pension theft.
Anna asked why Lorraine would be afraid of him.
Marcus said Samuel was lying because old employees resented anyone who escaped service work.
The sentence sounded like something a Whitmore executive would say.
Julian opened the payroll ledger and found monthly payments to a corporation registered in Marcus’s name.
The transfers began two weeks after Lorraine’s supposed death and totaled more than one million dollars.
Mourners who had insulted Anna now smiled with satisfaction.
They treated Marcus’s money as proof that the Reed family had been dishonest all along.
Anna refused to let their prejudice decide the meaning of the payments.
She demanded that Marcus explain each transfer.
He confessed that the Whitmores had paid him to remain silent about Lorraine’s survival.
He had been seventeen when an attorney told him Anna would be charged with insurance fraud unless he signed a confidentiality agreement.
Marcus believed he was protecting his sister.
Later, when he learned Lorraine was alive, Henry offered additional money to help keep her hidden from the real conspirators.
Anna slapped the ledger shut.
Her brother had allowed her to grieve for twelve years because wealthy lawyers convinced him that deception was protection.
Marcus begged forgiveness, but she told him poor families were always forced to choose between impossible harms while rich families created the danger and called themselves generous for offering one escape.
The voice recorder suddenly activated.
Lorraine’s voice said, “Marcus did not betray me.”
“He was the child they used to control Anna.”
She named the person who arranged her false death.
It was not Mrs. Whitmore.
It was Julian.
