Chapter 1 - The Sack Marcus Tried to Ban

Henry Walker entered Whitmore House carrying a faded canvas sack tied with rope.

Marcus followed him across the Manhattan boutique’s marble floor.

“Sir, you cannot drag garbage through a showroom where people spend more in an afternoon than you earn in a year.”

Henry lowered his tired eyes.

“I came to return something to the owner.”

Marcus laughed as wealthy customers stared.

“The owner does not meet people who wander in from the street.”

Evelyn Whitmore heard the cruelty from beside an illuminated handbag display.

Then Henry gripped the rope and said, “Her mother asked me to protect it until Evelyn was ready.”

Evelyn noticed the embroidered initials E.W. and hurried forward.

“Wait. Let me see that mark.”

Henry looked into her face.

“You have your mother’s eyes—and her habit of arriving after someone poorer has already been humiliated.”

Inside the sack lay an ivory hand-sewn wedding gown, a photograph of Evelyn’s late mother wearing it and a sealed envelope labeled FOR EVELYN.

“You kept it all these years?” Evelyn whispered.

“I promised.”

Marcus lowered his head, but Henry stopped him from apologizing.

“Do not feel ashamed because she recognized me. Feel ashamed because you believed dignity required an expensive coat.”

Evelyn opened the envelope.

Her mother’s first sentence made her hands shake.

Evelyn, Henry is not bringing you my dress. He is returning the company we stole from him.
