Chapter 8 - The Promise Henry Never Explained
Henry admitted creating the Eleanor Whitmore Foundation after Margaret’s death.
Eleanor had secretly helped him recover part of the workers’ investment, but insisted the money remain hidden until Conrad no longer controlled the courts and company board.
Henry became trustee under another identity.
Evelyn’s anger rose.
“You let workers lose homes and medicine while millions sat untouched?”
Henry did not look away.
“I believed exposing the fund too early would let Conrad steal everything. I protected the money and abandoned the people it was meant to protect.”
Rosa’s voice cracked with fury.
“My husband died waiting for treatment that fund could have paid for. Do not call fear wisdom because you wore a poor man’s coat while making a rich man’s decision.”
Henry accepted that his promise had become another form of control.
He transferred the remaining foundation assets directly to the employee trust and surrendered his sole authority.
The workers voted to remove both Conrad and Evelyn from automatic leadership.
Evelyn accepted.
Conrad mocked her through a press statement, calling the vote proof that employees were too emotional to manage a luxury brand.
The next morning, seamstresses, warehouse staff and sales associates reopened every store under worker control.
They placed Margaret Walker’s name beside the original gown.
Conrad was arrested for pension fraud and document falsification.
As officers led him from his townhouse, he shouted that Eleanor had never died naturally.
