Evelyn had signed after being praised as the compassionate new face of the brand.
Conrad transformed her kindness into a weapon against workers.
Henry did not excuse her.
“You had lawyers, education and every reason to read what carried your name. Poor employees sign because rent is due tomorrow. You signed because powerful men applauded you.”
Evelyn accepted the rebuke.
She sold her Manhattan penthouse and transferred the funds into an emergency medical account for employees.
Marcus offered his savings.
Rosa refused to praise either gesture.
“Workers should not depend on rich people becoming generous after being caught. We need control, not charity.”
The audit uncovered eighty-three million dollars taken from wages, pensions and health contributions.
The money financed Conrad’s homes, Whitmore galas and the boutique where Henry had been treated like trash.
Then accountants discovered Eleanor had created a secret employee trust before her death.
It granted workers majority ownership if the partnership fraud was proven.
However, the trust required the original wedding gown as evidence because its embroidery contained the founders’ ownership code.
Evelyn unfolded the dress.
