Chapter 3 - THE BOARD VOTE HIDDEN INSIDE THE GALA.
Nathan Hale chaired the emergency foundation meeting scheduled after dessert.
The public program called it a routine donor session.
The confidential agenda transferred control of the Hale Hotel Group from Richard to Nathan if Richard appeared medically impaired, intoxicated, or emotionally unstable during the gala.
Elena was named temporary voting proxy.
Richard stared at the documents as though the room had shifted beneath him.
“You planned to use my collapse as corporate evidence.”
Elena’s voice hardened.
“You were destroying this family by reopening employee claims that should have stayed buried.”
Sophie looked at Richard.
“What employee claims?”
He hesitated.
For years, hotel workers alleged that mandatory service fees were being redirected into executive development accounts. Richard recently ordered an independent audit, but he had not told the staff.
Elena laughed.
“Do not let him pretend he became a hero. He ignored those complaints for ten years.”
Sophie’s anger moved toward Richard.
“My mother filed three of them.”
Richard recognized the surname on her badge.
Lane.
Maria Lane had been the banquet captain who accused Hale Hotels of stealing gratuities and pension contributions.
The company dismissed her for “financial misconduct.”
She died two years later without health insurance.
Richard lowered his voice.
“I signed the dismissal.”
Sophie’s reply cut across the ballroom.
“You signed away her livelihood and never learned her daughter’s face.”
