Chapter 6 - THE WORDS RICHARD COULD NOT EXPLAIN.

Richard admitted saying the words.
He had discovered Nathan planned to sell six worker-housing buildings to a luxury developer.
Richard told Elena to stop the vote by any legal means necessary.
He never imagined she would target him.
Sophie did not let him hide inside intention.
“You still gave powerful people permission to act while keeping yourself clean.”
Richard lowered his eyes.
She was right.
He had spent years speaking in vague executive language—“handle it,” “contain it,” “protect the company”—then acting shocked when those words destroyed ordinary people.
Elena seized the opening.
“You see? He is not your savior. He signed every order.”
Richard answered, “And I will answer for them. That does not erase what you did tonight.”
The independent auditor arrived with preliminary results from the worker-housing trust.
Nathan and Elena had redirected rent reserves into private investment accounts.
Repairs were delayed in buildings where families reported mold, broken elevators, and failed heating systems.
At the same time, the Hale Foundation hosted galas about housing dignity.
Sophie remembered her mother saying the wealthy loved charity because charity allowed them to remain in charge.
Justice required them to surrender control.
Then the auditor revealed that Maria Lane had owned a protected voting share in the hotel group.
After her death, that share passed to Sophie.
She was not merely a server in the ballroom.
She held the deciding vote.
Nathan stared at her.
“That share cannot belong to someone carrying plates.”
May you like
Sophie answered:
“It belonged to the woman who carried your company.”
