Chapter 5 - THE SETTLEMENT SHE STOLE TWICE.

Elena claimed the payment was compensation for managing a reputational crisis.

The amount matched exactly what Maria had been promised for lost wages, medical coverage, and pension restoration.

Richard stared at his wife.

“You took her settlement?”

“I protected the Hale name,” Elena replied. “That name paid everyone in this room.”

Sophie’s voice shook with fury.

“No. People like my mother paid for that name. You just printed it on the napkins.”

Several guests began stepping away from Elena.

Their morality arrived only after association with her became dangerous.

Sophie noticed and hated them for it.

Hours earlier, they had ignored staff members carrying trays with swollen feet.

Now they whispered about justice because cameras were recording.

Nathan tried to leave through the service corridor.

Security blocked him.

He accused Richard of staging the scandal to remove him from the board.

Elena supported the claim.

She said Sophie had been paid to create the video and provoke a public crisis.

Richard asked Sophie to surrender her phone for forensic review.

She agreed immediately.

The metadata confirmed the recording was genuine.

But the phone contained another file Sophie had never seen.

It had been uploaded remotely that afternoon.

The video showed Richard meeting Elena alone in the hotel office.

His voice said:

“Do whatever it takes before the vote.”

Sophie looked at him.

“Were you warning her—or ordering her?”

Richard could not answer.
