Chapter 1 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT STOPPED THE WEDDING.

Elena Reyes walked into the Hawthorne wedding reception with blood beneath her nose, a bruise near her eye, and a cream envelope clenched inside her trembling hand.
Three hundred guests fell silent.
Graham Hawthorne stepped away from the bridal table, his expression hardening when he recognized the slate-gray uniform.
“Who let you into my family’s wedding?”
Elena swallowed through the pain.
“Your security tried to throw me out. I came because this belonged to my mother.”
A few guests whispered that she was drunk, unstable, or looking for money. No one asked who had scratched her face. A wealthy bride’s delayed toast mattered more to them than an injured worker standing beneath the chandeliers.
Graham opened the envelope.
Inside was a worn sepia photograph of an eight-year-old girl wearing a navy school jumper and a silver star pendant.
Mrs. Hawthorne saw it and went completely still.
“That photograph disappeared twenty years ago.”
Graham compared the child’s face with Elena’s. Elena pulled an identical silver star from beneath her uniform collar.
“Where did you get that necklace?”
“My mother said the Hawthornes would know my real name.”
The matriarch stepped forward.
“Clara…?”
Elena’s tears stopped.
“My mother’s name was Clara Reyes.”
Mrs. Hawthorne looked toward the ballroom entrance in sudden terror.

Then Elena added:
“She said you were the woman who paid to make her disappear.”
