Chapter 6 - THE SERVER WHO SIGNED THE BIRTH RECORD.
Rosa admitted she witnessed Elena’s birth twenty-four years earlier.
Clara had delivered in a small Baltimore clinic under the name Clara Reyes.
Mrs. Hawthorne’s attorneys arrived before sunrise and offered Rosa enough money to buy a house if she signed a statement saying the baby did not survive.
Rosa refused.
They threatened to report her undocumented sister and terminate every Reyes family member employed by Hawthorne Hotels.
Rosa signed.
Elena looked at her with tears in her eyes.
“You let my mother believe I had no legal proof.”
Rosa’s voice broke.
“I was afraid.”
“So was she.”
No one could soften the truth. Rosa had been coerced, but Clara and Elena had paid the price.
Mrs. Hawthorne smiled faintly.
“Now you understand. Everyone chooses security eventually.”
Rosa turned toward her.
“No. Poor people choose which wound will leave their children alive. Wealthy people create the knife and call the choice voluntary.”
She had secretly kept the clinic’s original birth ledger.
The record named Clara as Elena’s mother and listed a sealed identity for the father.
Graham asked why it had been hidden.
Clara feared the father’s family more than the Hawthornes.
Elena opened the sealed page.
Her biological father was Jonathan Langley—Victoria’s father and the attorney who helped erase Clara.
Victoria recoiled.
“That makes no sense.”
Elena stared at her.
“It makes me your half-sister.”
Then another truth surfaced.
Jonathan had represented Clara while secretly fathering her child.
He had not merely betrayed a client.
