Chapter 10 - The First Fraud
Richard Mercer remained chairman of the family company.
He had not attended the engagement because he was leading the merger vote from the Mercer tower across Manhattan.
Margaret looked frightened for the first time.
“Richard told me the child’s trust had to remain confidential.”
Daniel stared at her.
“You both knew Lily existed.”
“I knew there was a claim.”
“You held her letters.”
“Your father said recognition would bankrupt the company.”
Emily opened the trust history.
Richard had used Lily’s shares for six years.
He cast votes in her name.
Borrowed against her dividends.
Redirected employee housing money.
Then argued the child had never been legally reported.
Lily had been visible enough to profit from.
Invisible enough to deny.
The employee board froze every vote cast under her identity.
Executive bonuses entered restitution review.
Richard’s chairmanship was suspended pending an independent accounting.
A live message arrived from Mercer Tower.
Richard requested a private conversation with Daniel.
Daniel refused.
“Open the line.”
The rooftop speakers activated.
Richard’s voice remained calm.
“You are creating a scandal over a waitress and an old trust technicality.”
Daniel looked toward Emily.
Then at the workers who had paid for the rooftop beneath his feet.
“She was my partner.”
“Lily is my daughter.”
“And those apartments belong to the employees.”
Richard paused.
“You have no idea what those letters will expose.”
Emily picked up the final envelope.
It had no date.
No return address.
Only Lily’s name.
Inside was an original birth-trust certificate signed hours after Lily was born.
The witness signature belonged to Richard.
He had personally recognized her from the beginning.
But another line appeared beneath his name.
The certificate listed a second legal father.
Daniel stared at it.
“That’s impossible.”
Emily took the page.
She recognized the name.
Adrian Whitmore.
Vanessa’s older brother and the man whose company had tried to purchase the employee apartments.
Margaret whispered:
“Richard changed the record to keep both families under control.”
Emily shook her head.
“No.”
“The hospital copy was changed.”
She removed a second certificate she had kept for seven years.
Daniel was the only father listed on it.
One document was fraudulent.
But the trust registrar examined the seals and went pale.
Both were authentic.
Issued twelve minutes apart.
Under two separate court orders.
Lily looked up from her repaired drawing.
“Why do I have two dads?”
Before anyone answered, the private elevator opened.
Richard Mercer stepped onto the rooftop carrying the original family ledger.
He looked at Daniel.
Then Emily.
Finally at Lily.
“Because the letters were never hidden to protect the Mercer name.”
He placed the ledger beside the closed ring box.
