Chapter 8 - Vanessa’s Choice
Margaret had shown Vanessa the settlement before Daniel proposed.
Vanessa noticed inconsistencies immediately.
The signature did not match Emily’s letters.
The account address belonged to the Mercer office.
The money had returned to a family foundation.
She understood enough to question it.
She chose not to.
“I loved Daniel,” Vanessa said.
Emily looked at the merger documents.
“You loved what marrying him completed.”
Vanessa’s face tightened.
“Both can be true.”
“Yes,” Daniel answered. “That is what makes your choice worse.”
Vanessa had continued intercepting Emily’s letters because the engagement merger depended on Lily remaining unknown.
She kept them in her clutch that night because Margaret instructed her to deliver them to the Whitmore attorney after the proposal.
The attorney planned to argue that delayed notice invalidated Lily’s trust claim.
The letters were evidence.
Vanessa was not carrying them to destroy them.
She was carrying them to use against the child who wrote “Daddy” on a family drawing.
Daniel picked up the closed ring box.
Vanessa watched him.
He did not reopen it.
“The engagement is over.”
Her polished composure finally broke.
“You are choosing a former server over the woman who stood beside you for four years?”
“No.”
He looked toward Lily.
“I am refusing to marry the woman who tore a child’s drawing to protect a land deal.”
The Whitmore merger collapsed.
Vanessa lost the development fee promised after marriage.
Her family’s company entered review for attempting to acquire employee-owned property without consent.
Margaret was removed as Mercer trust chair.
Emily’s blacklist was formally voided.
The false settlement was referred to independent civil review.
Lily’s eighteen-percent share entered a protected trust controlled by a child advocate and employee representatives.
Then one unopened envelope remained.
