Chapter 4 - The Kitchen Door

Vanessa looked toward the service area.
“So that is why you brought the child here.”
Emily’s eyes hardened.
“I didn’t bring her to stop a merger.”
“I brought her because she asked why her father was proposing to someone who said she didn’t exist.”
Lily held the torn drawing tighter.
Vanessa had seen her before.
Three weeks earlier, Emily delivered drinks to a private engagement-planning dinner. Lily waited safely in the staff lounge with the event supervisor.
Vanessa entered by mistake.
Lily showed her the same drawing and asked whether Daniel would attend her school recital.
Vanessa recognized the child immediately.
She also recognized Daniel’s face on the sealed letters Emily carried in her workbag.
Instead of telling him, Vanessa called Margaret.
Margaret instructed her to take every envelope.
Vanessa claimed she was protecting Daniel from disruption before an important business announcement.
Emily stared at her.
“You stole letters from a server because you assumed no one would believe her.”
Vanessa replied:
“You were using a child to reach a wealthy man.”
Daniel looked at the engagement platform.
The white flowers.
The skyline.
The photographers.
Then at Emily’s modest uniform.
“Vanessa used our proposal to reach a wealthy family.”
Silence.
The class judgment had always moved in only one direction.
A working mother seeking recognition was called manipulative.
A socialite using marriage to complete a corporate merger was called strategic.
Daniel turned toward the event staff.
“How much of tonight was charged to the company?”
The rooftop manager opened the budget.
Flowers.
Champagne.
The orchestra.
The private elevator.
Even Vanessa’s gown allowance had been billed to the employee housing fund as merger communications.

The workers serving the engagement had paid for the event that excluded Daniel’s daughter.
Then the manager revealed their overtime had been denied.
