Chapter 10 - The First Maid

Inside the wheelchair cushion was an old envelope.

The paper had yellowed.

The handwriting belonged to Eleanor’s mother-in-law, Beatrice Harrington.

Arthur recognized it immediately.

Beatrice was remembered in family histories as the elegant matriarch who expanded the Harrington fortune.

Her letter told another story.

The original employee stewardship fund had not been created by the Harringtons.

It had been created by a maid named Clara Morgan.

Leah’s grandmother.

During the Great Depression, Clara organized mansion workers across Massachusetts to combine savings, purchase housing and protect widows from eviction.

Beatrice later absorbed the cooperative into the Harrington estate.

Family histories credited her with creating it.

Clara’s name disappeared.

Leah stared at the document.

“My grandmother owned part of the fund?”

Eleanor nodded.

“She owned the deciding share.”

One percent.

Small enough for the Harrington family to ignore.

Powerful enough to determine control now that the misconduct clause had activated.

The share passed through Clara’s descendants.

To Leah.

Victoria had not merely tried to fire a maid.

She had tried to remove the legal successor whose vote could expose the entire history of the family fortune.

Arthur read the final paragraph.

His face changed.

“What?”

Eleanor asked.

The letter stated that Clara Morgan’s share had been purchased illegally after her death.

The buyer’s signature appeared at the bottom.

Arthur Harrington.

Leah looked at him.

Arthur went pale.

“I was twenty-six.”

“Did you sign it?” Eleanor asked.

He stared at the faded page.

“Yes.”

“But my father told me Clara had no surviving family.”

Leah’s eyes filled.

“My mother was alive.”

Arthur closed his eyes.

The man who had entered the ballroom to protect Eleanor had also helped erase Leah’s family decades earlier.

Then the ivory-and-gold doors opened once more.

An elderly Black woman entered with a silver-topped cane and the original cooperative ledger beneath her arm.

Every older guest recognized her.

Judge Ruth Morgan.

Leah’s great-aunt.

The woman the Harrington family had publicly claimed died without heirs.

She looked at Arthur.

“You saw exactly what Victoria tried to do tonight.”

A pause.

May you like

“Now everyone will see what you did to Clara.”

TO BE CONTINUED.
