Chapter 8 - Arthur’s Share

Arthur did not claim ignorance this time.
He sat beside Eleanor’s wheelchair.
“I received the distributions.”
“Did you ask where they came from?”
“No.”
“Why?”
He looked toward the staff.
“Because I believed family accounting was someone else’s responsibility.”
Leah’s expression remained guarded.
Arthur had arrived as a protector.
That did not erase the system that protected him.
Victoria seized the opening.
“You see? He benefited too.”
Arthur looked at her.
“Yes.”
The admission stopped her.
He continued:
“And I will repay every dollar.”
Victoria laughed bitterly.
“You think confession makes you noble?”
“No.”
“It makes the record accurate.”
Arthur transferred his Harrington shares into temporary independent review.
He waived his family distribution until employee accounts were restored.
Then he addressed the guests.
“No one here will call this a misunderstanding.”
“We watched a woman in a wheelchair threatened because she refused to make workers homeless.”
Several board members lowered their eyes.
They had approved the redevelopment based on Victoria’s summary.
Not one had read the resident impact report.
Arthur called the emergency vote.
Victoria was removed as foundation chair.
The private club project was canceled.
The apartments were placed under permanent employee stewardship.
Leah’s mother’s retirement account was restored posthumously, with the balance transferring to Leah.
Victoria stared at her.
“So now you get money.”
Leah looked at the severed years behind that payment.
“No.”
“Now my mother’s work is finally recorded.”

Then Eleanor announced the final motion.
The mansion would no longer belong solely to the Harrington family.
