Chapter 2 - The Camera Home
Judge Carter ordered the courtroom doors closed.
The reporters remained outside.
This hearing would not become another photograph.
Maya opened Lily’s placement log.
The child had lived with Victoria and Adrian for eight months.
Yet her suitcase remained packed because she was never given permanent drawers.
She slept in a decorated guest room whenever photographers visited.
On ordinary nights, she slept in a smaller room beside the laundry area so Victoria’s assistants could prepare the guest suite for donors.
Victoria objected.
“The service room was quieter.”
Lily looked down.
“It didn’t have a window.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
“I thought she preferred that room.”
Victoria turned toward him.
“She had trouble sleeping.”
“Did you ask her?”
Silence.
The campaign was called A Family for Every Child.
Victoria’s foundation had used Lily in billboards, donor videos and luxury-magazine profiles.
She wore the same pale-blue dress in every photograph.
The corsage was not a gift.
It was a brand color.
Lily had been instructed to smile beside Victoria at charity dinners, then eat with assistants afterward because sponsors wanted the family table to look “clean and intimate.”
Judge Carter looked at the untouched clothes.
“Who purchased these?”
Victoria lifted her chin.
“My stylist.”
Lily whispered:
“I wasn’t allowed to wear them unless someone was filming.”
The humiliation was precise.
A wealthy family had surrounded her with beautiful things, then taught her none of them truly belonged to her.
Maya found a campaign schedule inside the suitcase lining.
The final event was dated the following Friday.
The adoption ceremony had been listed beneath it as:
Permanent-family announcement and donor conversion opportunity.
Adrian stared at the page.
“You scheduled the adoption as a fundraising event?”
Victoria answered quietly:
“The foundation needed momentum.”
Judge Carter closed the file.
“This child needed a home.”
