THE UNPACKED SUITCASE / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - Her Own Rescue

Nearly two million dollars had been withdrawn from Lily’s trust.

The expenses included wardrobe, photographers, campaign travel and the pale-blue corsages worn during family appearances.

Victoria called them child-development costs.

Judge Carter read the invoices aloud.

Private aircraft.

A ballroom dinner.

Media coaching.

Custom clothing Lily could wear only for photographs.

None benefited the child outside the campaign.

The old suitcase beneath Lily’s chair had cost twenty-three dollars at a thrift store.

The foundation had purchased it after deciding a worn suitcase would make Lily’s arrival photographs more emotional.

Lily touched the scratched handle.

“You bought it broken?”

Victoria looked away.

The campaign had presented the suitcase as evidence of the hardship from which the wealthy family saved her.

In reality, Victoria’s staff had removed Lily’s newer bag and replaced it.

They manufactured humiliation because donors responded better to visible poverty.

Adrian closed his eyes.

He appeared in those photographs.

He stood beside Lily and praised her courage.

He had never asked why the suitcase remained packed after eight months.

“I helped them use you,” he said.

Victoria turned toward him.

“You loved the campaign when investors praised you.”

He looked at her.

“Yes.”

The admission did not make him innocent.

It made denial unavailable.

Adrian withdrew from the adoption petition.

He surrendered his company’s interest in the Harbor House contract.

His campaign profits entered restitution review.

The court ordered every dollar removed from Lily’s trust returned from Victoria and Adrian’s personal assets.

Harbor House residents would receive independent legal representation.

Rosa’s home study resumed under a new agency.

For the first time, Lily was asked what she wanted without a camera present.

“I want to unpack at Rosa’s.”

Maya smiled softly.

Then Lily opened her folded blanket.

A small brass key fell from its stitched edge.
