Chapter 4 - Rosa’s File
Rosa Alvarez joined the hearing by secure video.
She wore her hotel uniform because her supervisor would not release her for the day.
Victoria’s attorney had described that job as evidence of instability.
Rosa had worked at the same hotel for seventeen years.
She had never missed rent.
Never received a neglect complaint.
Never failed a home inspection.
But she did not own property.
Victoria’s evaluation treated renting as a moral weakness.
Rosa’s apartment was called cramped.
Victoria’s guesthouse was called secure.
Rosa’s night shifts were called absence.
Victoria’s gala travel was called professional responsibility.
Rosa’s limited savings were called risk.
Victoria’s inherited wealth was called stability.
Judge Carter read the original home-study notes.
Lily had described Rosa as the person who stayed beside her during nightmares, attended school meetings and learned how to care for her hair when Lily wanted to wear it differently.
Those positive sections had been removed from the final report.
The evaluator added a new conclusion:
The child may receive greater social opportunity in an affluent household.
Judge Carter’s expression hardened.
“A child is not a scholarship awarded to the richest applicant.”
Victoria spoke carefully.
“We could offer Lily better schools.”
Rosa looked into the camera.
“I offered her a place where she could leave her suitcase open.”
Lily began crying silently.
Maya moved closer without touching her until Lily reached for her hand.
Adrian looked toward Victoria.
“Did you pay to change Rosa’s evaluation?”
“I paid for a thorough assessment.”
“You paid for the answer you needed.”
Victoria’s voice sharpened.
“Adrian, do not reduce this family to sentiment.”
Lily looked at him.
“Rosa never made me practice saying I loved her.”
The judge suspended the adoption petition.
Then Maya opened the financial section attached to Lily’s case.
