Chapter 3 - THE INHERITANCE GIVEN TO THE WRONG SON.
The Ashford family attorney arrived before the applause for the piano performance had fully faded.
He carried a leather portfolio containing Maria’s estate records.
According to the official documents, Maria died unmarried and without children.
Her shares in Ashford Hotels transferred to Vincent.
The transfer made him the controlling heir and funded his expansion of the family’s luxury properties.
Vincent stared at the papers as though they had changed weight in his hands.
He had built his reputation on an inheritance that may never have belonged to him.
Victoria insisted the documents remained valid.
She said even if Eli were Maria’s child, a banquet server could not suddenly claim control of an international hotel group.
Her words revealed what mattered most.
Not whether Eli had lost his mother.
Not whether Maria’s history had been erased.
Only whether the person standing before her looked rich enough to inherit.
Eli said he did not come for the company.
He came because Maria had once played in that ballroom, and his supervisor mentioned the hotel still kept her piano.
The family attorney asked for identification.
Eli produced a state-issued card, school records, and Maria Cole’s death certificate.
The certificate listed no father.
His birth certificate named Maria as his mother.
Victoria called the records easy to forge.
Nora asked why she assumed a fifteen-year-old catering employee had resources to fabricate government documents but never questioned paperwork prepared by her own attorneys.
The attorney proposed private DNA testing and urged everyone to end the public scene.
Eli understood the offer.
Private meant the Ashfords could control the laboratory, the timing, and the story.
He requested an independent test witnessed by the court.
Vincent agreed.
Victoria did not.
Then a banquet captain named Rosa Alvarez stepped forward.
She had worked at the hotel eighteen years earlier.
She remembered Maria performing while visibly pregnant during a staff holiday dinner.
The Ashfords told employees the pregnancy belonged to another musician.
Rosa had kept an old photograph.
It showed Maria holding a newborn beside the piano.
Vincent stood beside her.
He was smiling at the baby.
