Housekeepers, cooks, porters, and maintenance workers contributed part of their wages.
Victoria later used the same brooch to frame Daniel.
Afterward, the stones were divided into cuff links presented to executives who approved the company’s expansion.
The board had turned evidence of a poor man’s humiliation into a symbol of elite loyalty.
Several directors claimed they never knew the diamonds’ history.
Rosa asked whether ignorance became innocence only for wealthy people.
Daniel had been expected to prove he did not steal an object hidden inside private board jewelry.
The directors never asked where their gifts came from.
The imbalance defined the Ashford world.
Workers had to explain every dollar.
Executives could inherit stolen evidence without curiosity.
Independent investigators collected the cuff links.
Victoria finally admitted planting the brooch accusation, but she insisted she acted to protect Maria from an unsuitable marriage.
She said Daniel could never give her daughter stability.
Eli looked around the ballroom.
“My parents had each other. You took away their work, their health, and their name. Then you blamed them for being poor.”
The answer left Victoria silent.
Rosa and Nora accepted temporary trusteeship over Eli’s shares.
Their first action froze executive bonuses and redirected funds toward employee pensions, healthcare, and review of past retaliation cases.
The board objected that a teenager’s trust should not be used for emotional policy.
Eli responded, “Your policies were emotional too. You were afraid workers might become powerful.”
Vincent supported the freeze.
He also offered to transfer his personal hotel shares into the employee trust.
Eli did not praise him.
Restitution was not generosity when the wealth had come from Maria’s erasure.
Then the hotel accountant found another irregularity.
For fifteen years, monthly payments had been issued in Maria Cole’s name from a private Ashford account.
The most recent check had been deposited two weeks earlier.
