Chapter 8 - The Board Chose

The board convened at midnight.
Victoria insisted Eleanor was confused.
Eleanor answered every financial question without assistance.
Occupancy rates.
Property debt.
Staff turnover.
Resident-care ratios.
The directors became uncomfortable.
The elderly woman Victoria called incompetent understood the company better than the executives trying to sell it.
Leah played the recording.
The auditor presented the false payroll.
Ethan admitted he signed Victoria’s authority without reading it.
One director defended the sale.
“We must protect family wealth.”
Eleanor looked at him.
“The employees created the wealth.”
The room went silent.
Eleanor proposed a different plan.
The sale would be rejected.
Executive bonuses would be frozen.
Unpaid staff would be compensated first.
Twenty percent of future equity would enter an employee trust.
Residents would receive veto rights over sales involving their homes.
Ethan stared.
“You’re reducing family control.”
“No.”
Eleanor’s voice remained steady.
“I am reducing family entitlement.”
The vote passed.
Victoria lost her board seat.
Ethan’s voting proxy was suspended.
Leah remained temporary protector.
Then Eleanor looked at Victoria.
“You told Leah she was not family.”
May you like
A pause.
“Tonight she protected everything our family claimed to stand for.”
