Chapter 9 - Your Suitcase Too

Morning light crossed the marble.
Victoria’s suitcase waited beside the black double doors.
She looked at Leah.
“You think you own this house now.”
Leah shook her head.
“No.”
“That is why Mrs. Harrington trusted me.”
She looked toward Eleanor.
“I understand the difference between protecting someone and possessing them.”
Victoria turned to Ethan.
“You are letting a maid throw your wife out.”
He answered:
“No.”
“My mother is making a decision you tried to steal from her.”
Victoria’s eyes hardened.
“You signed the authority.”
“Yes.”
His voice broke.
“And I will live with what that allowed.”
The attendant opened the doors.
Victoria reached for her suitcase.
Before leaving, she looked at Eleanor.
“You will regret trusting servants.”
Eleanor replied:
“I regret trusting relatives who believed servants could not read.”
Victoria walked outside.
The doors closed.
Then Eleanor looked at Ethan.
“Your suitcase too.”
He froze.
“Mom?”
“You ignored Leah.”
“You signed without reading.”
“You discussed selling people’s homes.”
He looked wounded.
“You want me to leave?”
“I want you to understand that being my son does not automatically make you safe for me.”

Leah opened the doors again.
Ethan quietly reached for his black suitcase.
