Chapter 14 - THE STORY HE TOLD HIS MOTHER.

Ryan had called his mother before he admitted to Emily what happened.

That fact alone should not have mattered.

People call family during emergencies.

It was normal.

What mattered was what he had said.

Emily could see it on his face before he answered.

"What did you tell her?"

Ryan slipped the phone into his pocket.

"That we were caught in flooding."

"We were."

"That the SUV is probably totaled."

"It is."

"That we're safe."

"We are."

Emily waited.

Ryan looked toward the open doorway.

"Dad?"

He wasn't there.

Good.

This was theirs.

"What else?"

Ryan rubbed his jaw.

"Nothing."

Emily almost believed him.

Then his mother appeared outside the north entrance twenty minutes later.

She wore a raincoat over clothes that had clearly been put on quickly.

Ryan's father followed carrying an umbrella.

They looked frightened.

Emily softened immediately.

Whatever class tensions existed, these were Sophie's grandparents.

Ryan's mother, Carol, rushed inside.

"Oh my God."

She embraced Ryan first.

Emily noticed.

Of course she did.

Carol touched Ryan's face.

"Look at you."

"I'm okay."

"We were terrified."

"I'm fine."

Then Carol turned toward Emily.

"And you."

Emily prepared for the hug.

Carol didn't hug her.

She reached toward Sophie.

"My baby."

Emily's body tightened instinctively.

Carol noticed.

Her hands stopped.

"Can I?"

Emily nodded.

Carol touched Sophie's blanket.

"She's warm."

"Yes."

"Thank God."

For one moment, everything felt sincere.

Then Carol looked around.

"Ryan said the car got swept."

Emily glanced at him.

"Shifted."

Ryan corrected.

"It didn't fully sweep away."

Carol shook her head.

"I told your father that ridiculous lot floods."

Frank had come closer.

Carol noticed him.

"Frank."

"Carol."

She looked at his soaked clothing.

"My goodness. Were you out there too?"

Frank nodded.

"A little."

Carol smiled.

"I should've known you'd be helping."

It sounded kind.

Maybe it was.

Then she added:

"You always know how to handle these practical things."

Frank's expression did not change.

Emily heard it anyway.

Practical things.

Frank fixed.

Ryan led.

Class had vocabulary.

Carol turned to Emily.

"Ryan said you wisely stayed near the church with Sophie."

Emily stared.

Ryan's face went pale.

There.

The story.

Emily spoke carefully.

"That's what he told you?"

Carol looked confused.

"Yes."

Ryan stepped in.

"I said she was closer to the church."

"No," Carol said. "You said she was safe the whole time."

Silence.

Ryan's father looked at him.

"Son?"

Ryan closed his eyes.

Emily felt something inside her harden.

Carol looked around.

"What?"

Nobody answered.

She looked at Frank.

Frank immediately looked away.

Smart man.

Carol turned to Emily.

"What happened?"

Emily's voice was quiet.

"Ask Ryan."

Carol looked at her son.

Ryan rubbed his forehead.

"I panicked."

Carol blinked.

"What does that mean?"

"The water came up fast."

"We know."

"I went for the SUV."

"Why?"

Ryan looked toward the muddy car seat.

Carol followed.

For the first time, she saw it.

Her expression changed.

"Is that Sophie's?"

Emily nodded.

Carol stared at the mud.

Then at the dry blanket around Sophie.

"Where was she?"

Ryan's face tightened.

Emily held her breath.

This was the question.

Finally.

Not from Frank.

Not Linda.

Not Emily.

His mother.

Ryan answered.

"With Emily."

"Where?"

"Near the church."

Emily almost laughed.

Still.

Still shrinking it.

Carol looked at Emily.

Emily said nothing.

Ryan's father spoke.

"Ryan."

Ryan turned.

"What?"

"Where was your wife?"

Ryan stared at him.

The room seemed to settle around that question.

Ryan swallowed.

"Closer to the lot."

Carol's face changed.

"How close?"

Ryan snapped.

"I don't know exactly."

Emily looked at him.

"There."

He turned.

"What?"

"You don't know."

Carol looked between them.

"Ryan, what happened?"

He looked trapped.

Emily almost felt sorry for him.

Then he said:

"Dad went back for them."

Frank's head lifted.

Emily's pulse stopped.

Carol turned toward Frank.

"You went back?"

Frank gave Ryan a long look.

Then answered only the question.

"I went toward them."

Carol looked at Sophie.

Then at Ryan.

"Why weren't you with them?"

Ryan's face reddened.

"I had climbed out."

"Of what?"

"The SUV."

Carol stared.

Emily felt the facts forming in Carol's mind.

SUV.

Flood.

Ryan outside.

Emily with newborn.

Frank going toward them.

Muddy car seat.

Dry baby blanket.

Ryan saw it too.

He stepped closer to his mother.

"I panicked."

Carol's face softened immediately.

Emily felt sick.

Not because compassion was wrong.

Because it came before accountability.

"Oh, honey."

Ryan exhaled.

His father did not move.

Carol touched Ryan's arm.

"You could've died."

Emily closed her eyes.

There it was.

The room resetting.

Ryan as the center.

Ryan's fear.

Ryan's trauma.

Ryan's survival.

Carol looked at Emily.

"And you must've been terrified too."

Too.

One word.

An addition.

Emily opened her eyes.

"I was."

Carol nodded.

"Of course."

Ryan's father looked at Frank.

"What did you see?"

Carol turned.

"Not now."

Emily felt anger rise.

Why not now?

Because truth made the reunion uncomfortable?

Ryan's father ignored her.

"Frank?"

Frank said, "Ask your son."

Carol's voice sharpened.

"We just got here."

Frank nodded.

"Then you got time."

Ryan stepped forward.

"Don't speak to my mother like that."

Emily turned.

"Ryan."

He looked at her.

She couldn't believe it.

After everything.

His instinct was still to defend status before substance.

Frank held up a hand.

"I'm not fighting."

Carol looked offended.

"No one said you were."

Frank glanced at Ryan.

Ryan's jaw tightened.

The entire day balanced on small sentences.

Emily thought about the chair.

The wine.

The old blanket.

The ordering at restaurants.

Nearby.

Safe the whole time.

Every phrase softened what powerful people did and sharpened what less powerful people said back.

Emily adjusted Sophie higher.

"I am not going to your parents' house."

Carol stared.

"What?"

Ryan went still.

Emily continued.

"Not tonight."

Carol looked hurt.

"Emily, whatever happened, you don't have to make decisions right now."

"I agree."

"Then come somewhere comfortable."

Emily almost smiled.

Comfortable.

Of course.

She looked at Frank.

His house was smaller.

The guest room still had a bookshelf full of her mother's paperbacks.

The shower pressure was terrible.

The couch sagged.

The refrigerator made a noise like a lawn mower.

But nobody there would make her explain why she was upset.

Emily looked at Carol.

"I'm going with Dad."

Ryan's face changed.

"Em."

"Tonight."

He stepped closer.

"Please don't."

Carol looked between them.

"Ryan?"

Emily looked at her husband.

"Why?"

His answer came too quickly.

"Because it'll look like we're separating."

Emily stared.

Not because you'll miss me.

Not because we need to talk.

Not because Sophie should be home.

Because it'll look like.

Ryan realized.

Too late.

Frank closed his eyes.

Linda looked down.

Carol's face went still.

Emily whispered:

"There it is again."

Ryan's voice cracked.

"That's not what I meant."

Emily nodded.

May you like

"I know."

And somehow that was worse.
