Chapter 1 - THE SPLASH BEFORE THE VOWS.
Claire Bennett was still smiling when Ethan Cole let her fall.
One moment, he held her in a graceful wedding dip beneath the chandeliers of the Palm Beach conservatory.
The next, he lowered her toward the reflecting pool and released both hands.
Claire landed in the shallow water with a violent splash, her white lace skirt spreading around her like a broken flower.
Guests gasped.
Several raised their phones.
Ethan remained dry on the pale-stone rim, watching his bride struggle beneath the weight of her soaked gown.
Nora, the bridesmaid in burgundy, stepped forward.
“Claire!”
Ethan lifted one hand to stop her.
Claire pushed the wet fabric away from her chest and looked up at the man she had trusted completely.
“Why would you do this to me?”
His brief laugh disappeared.
“Because I found out—”
He stopped before finishing.
His mother, Victoria Cole, approached from the front row and looked at Claire as though the humiliation were deserved.
“Do not make this more embarrassing than it already is.”
Claire’s heart broke twice.
Once because Ethan had dropped her.
Again because no one from his family helped her stand.
Then Nora entered the water, gathered Claire’s veil, and pulled her toward the stone edge.
As Claire rose, a small leather folder slipped from inside Ethan’s tuxedo jacket and landed beside her in the pool.
The clasp opened.
A signed property transfer floated to the surface.
Claire recognized her own signature.
She had signed a wedding-license packet that morning.
She had never agreed to transfer her inheritance.
Ethan reached for the document.
Nora took it first.
