Madeline had been born from a secret relationship between Claire’s grandfather and Victoria’s younger sister.
The Bennett and Cole families concealed her identity because acknowledging the child would complicate both estates.
She was raised by distant relatives, educated with private money, and later employed as Victoria’s secretary so the family could monitor her without granting her status.
Madeline spent years arranging dinners, carrying documents, and watching legitimate heirs inherit fortunes connected to her father.
Victoria promised that helping Ethan secure the Bennett trust would finally earn Madeline a legal share.

She never needed to help Ethan steal it.

“You said there was no other way.”

“There was no respectable way.”

Madeline agreed to cooperate.

A surveillance invoice showed someone had been photographing Claire there.
The photographer captured her entering the building three weeks earlier.
Claire had never visited it.
The woman in the images wore her face, her hair, and her engagement ring.
Ethan said the photographs proved Claire had known about the account.
