THE CHANDELIER TRAP / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - The Black Box

The chandelier contained a hidden safety recorder.

Maya’s mother had designed the system after a fatal collapse at an older Sterling property.

It recorded cable strain.

Maintenance access.

Backup-brake changes.

And every remote command sent to the fixture.

Daniel stared at the device.

“My family said those systems were removed.”

Maya looked at him.

“Your family removed her name.”

“Not her work.”

The recorder showed the staged six-inch drop Daniel approved.

Then a second command changed the limit.

Six inches became a full release.

The change occurred forty-three minutes before the crash.

The user entered through Samuel Hartwell’s office.

Claire’s face went white.

Then Maya opened the camera log.

Samuel had not been inside his office at that time.

Someone had used his executive seal remotely.

Daniel asked:

“Who had access?”

Claire already knew.

Only three people.

Samuel.

Claire.

And the Sterling family’s trust attorney.

The attorney who prepared Daniel’s proxy.

The same man who convinced both families that Claire was too emotional to manage billions while pregnant.

Maya opened the final audio channel.

A man’s voice played:

When the chandelier falls, Daniel will blame the maid. Claire will sign. Samuel will lose the trust. Everyone behaves exactly as their class taught them.

The penthouse went silent.

Daniel looked ashamed.

The man had predicted him perfectly.

Then another voice answered.

A woman.

And if Maya saves her?

The attorney replied:

Then the pregnancy clause activates and exposes the worker shares.

A pause.

Which is exactly what we need.

Claire stared at Maya.

“This was meant to reveal the trust?”

Maya shook her head.

“By risking your life.”

The private elevator chimed.

Its doors opened.

Samuel Hartwell stepped into the penthouse carrying the original chandelier plans.

He looked at Claire.

Then Daniel.

Finally at Maya.

“I ordered the six-inch test,” he said.

Claire stopped breathing.

Samuel placed the plans on the marble.

“But I did not order the full drop.”

Maya looked at him.

“Then who did?”

Samuel turned toward the open elevator.

A second figure remained inside, hidden in shadow.

Samuel’s face hardened.

May you like

“The person who has spent twenty-six years pretending Maya’s mother died in an accident.”
