THE CHANDELIER TRAP / Chapter 5 / 10

Chapter 5 - The Protector

Claire’s mother had anticipated coercion.

Buried inside the Hartwell trust was an emergency pregnancy clause.

If anyone attempted to obtain Claire’s authority through fear, deception or a staged medical incident, the proxy would become void.

Control would transfer temporarily to an independent protector.

Daniel read the name.

Then stopped breathing.

Maya Brooks.

He stared at the maid in the gray uniform.

“This is impossible.”

Maya looked equally stunned.

Claire was not.

“My mother knew your mother.”

Maya turned.

“What?”

Claire explained.

Maya’s mother had worked as a safety supervisor on the first Hartwell medical tower. She reported defects that Sterling executives wanted hidden.

Claire’s mother believed her.

Daniel’s family did not.

After the dispute, Maya’s mother lost her job and her professional reputation.

But Claire’s mother placed her daughter’s name inside the trust.

A future witness from outside both wealthy families.

Someone who understood what powerful people did to workers who refused silence.

Daniel looked at Maya differently now.

Not with respect.

With fear.

The woman he called staff could suspend the proxy.

Freeze trust distributions.

Block any property transfer.

And remove Daniel from temporary financial authority.

Maya looked at Claire.

“I don’t want your money.”

Claire shook her head.

“You don’t receive it.”

“Then what do I control?”

“The door.”

Maya frowned.

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“You decide who gets near the trust until we know who tried to bring that chandelier down.”

Maya opened the emergency portal.

Daniel stepped forward.

“You cannot give a maid control over my family.”

Maya looked directly at him.

“No.”

May you like

She selected the suspension order.

“Your wife’s mother already did.”
