Chapter 6 - The Staff Door
The penthouse family accounts froze first.
Daniel’s private cards stopped working.
His mother’s monthly distribution was suspended.
The trust’s property-transfer system locked.
But staff payroll remained active.
Maya had selected that protection before anything else.
Daniel noticed.
“You froze my family but protected the employees.”
Maya looked at him.
“They didn’t cut the cable.”
The words landed.
For six weeks, penthouse staff had been told payroll delays were caused by a banking transition.
During the same period, Daniel’s family paid for private flights, gallery purchases and a nursery designer Claire had never hired.
Maya opened the household ledger.
Food-service wages had been charged to Claire’s maternal-health trust.
Maintenance salaries had been reduced while the same department billed the trust at full cost.
Even the chandelier replacement budget had been charged twice.
Claire stared.
“You used my pregnancy fund to pay household expenses.”
Daniel looked genuinely shocked.
“I didn’t know.”
Maya’s expression remained cold.
“You had the reports.”
“I delegated them.”
“To your mother.”
Silence.
Once again, wealthy ignorance had been purchased with someone else’s labor.
Maya examined the chandelier invoice.
The replacement cable had been ordered from Sterling Private Services.
The same family company managing Daniel’s hunting property.
The wire cutters had been purchased through that office.
Daniel’s face went pale.
Then Maya found an attached voice memo.
A woman’s voice spoke clearly:
Make sure Claire signs before the cable drops.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Claire recognized the speaker.
Her mother-in-law.
Evelyn Sterling.
But the memo continued.
A man answered:
May you like
Daniel already approved the scare.
Claire slowly turned toward her husband.
