THE CHANDELIER TRAP / Chapter 8 / 10

Chapter 8 - The Freeze

Claire’s father, Samuel Hartwell, had controlled the company after her mother’s death.

He told Claire the trust would become fully hers after the baby was born.

Until then, he remained chief executive.

The payment for the chandelier contractor came from his private office.

Claire stared at the authorization.

“My father knew.”

Daniel looked almost relieved.

Maya noticed.

“You think this makes you less guilty?”

His expression hardened.

“No.”

But it did.

Some part of him wanted the blame distributed until his own betrayal felt smaller.

Maya refused to give him that comfort.

“You approved terror.”

“Someone else turned it into attempted murder.”

“Both facts can be true.”

Claire looked at her.

The simple honesty steadied her.

Maya used the protector authority to freeze Samuel Hartwell’s executive access.

Daniel stared.

“You just locked the founder out of his own company.”

“No.”

Maya replied calmly.

“I locked an executive out of Claire’s trust.”

The penthouse system announced the suspension.

Family distributions: frozen.

Executive bonuses: frozen.

Employee payroll: protected.

Building safety budgets: protected.

Claire almost smiled through tears.

For the first time, the trust protected workers before wealthy relatives.

Then Samuel Hartwell called.

Claire answered on speaker.

His voice was controlled.

“Remove Maya from the portal.”

“No.”

“Claire, you do not understand what she is.”

Maya’s face changed.

Claire looked at her father.

“What does that mean?”

Samuel remained silent for a moment.

Then said:

“Maya was not hired by the penthouse.”

Daniel stared.

May you like

Samuel continued:

“Your mother placed her there.”
